About copper & half round gutters

Most gutter in the valley is 5 inch K-style aluminum, and for most houses that is the right answer. Copper and half round are for the jobs where it is not. A restored North End bungalow, a custom build where the architect specified the profile, or an owner who has decided the gutter should look like it belongs on the house.

Half round is the older profile, a true semicircle rather than the ogee shape of K-style. It carries less water per inch of width, so it is sized up rather than swapped like for like, and it is usually hung on external brackets that are part of the look instead of hidden hangers. Getting that spacing right matters more than it does on K-style, because there is nowhere to hide a sag on a curve.

Copper is a different material to work as well as a different price. Corners are soldered rather than sealed, which is why a properly made copper mitre outlasts the roof it is fitted to. It also weathers. It arrives bright, dulls through brown over the first year or two, and eventually takes the green patina people are usually buying it for. Nobody should spend copper money without knowing that timeline.

How we do it

  1. Agree the profile and material first

    Copper, aluminum half round and K-style all price very differently and all look very different on the house. We would rather have that conversation properly at the estimate than have you see the finished job and wish you had chosen the other one.

  2. Size for the profile, not the habit

    A half round carries less water than a K-style of the same nominal size, because the cross section is genuinely smaller. Swapping like for like is the most common mistake we are called out to fix, and it shows up the first time a summer storm arrives.

  3. Bracket spacing worked out for the curve

    Half round hangs on external brackets that are visible and part of the look. Spacing has to suit the snow load and the span, because a sag on a curved profile has nowhere to hide.

  4. Solder the copper, do not seal it

    Copper corners and outlets are soldered. A soldered joint is a permanent metal to metal bond rather than a bead of sealant with a service life, which is most of why copper lasts as long as it does.

Material
Copper is several times the price of aluminum per foot and it moves with the commodity market. Aluminum half round sits between the two and gives you the profile without the copper cost.
Soldering
Soldered corners and outlets take skilled time that a sealed K-style mitre does not. It is a real part of the number and it is the part you are actually paying for.
Brackets and downspouts
External brackets and round downspouts cost more than hidden hangers and rectangular stock, and on a copper job they are usually copper too.
Roofline complexity
Every corner on a copper job is hand made. A cut up roofline costs proportionally more here than it does on K-style.

Do you actually fabricate copper, or do you order it in?

We form it on site the same way we form aluminum, and we solder the corners and outlets rather than sealing them. That matters, because a soldered joint is a metal to metal bond with no service life to expire, whereas a sealed joint is a bead of caulk that will eventually harden and crack. It is most of the reason copper outlasts everything around it.

What does copper cost compared to aluminum?

Several times more per foot, and the exact multiple moves with the copper market. If you want the half round profile without the copper price, aluminum half round is the middle option and it is a good one. We will quote both side by side so you can see the difference on your own house rather than in the abstract.

Will the copper stay shiny?

No, and it is worth knowing that before you commit. It arrives bright, dulls to a deep brown over the first year or two, and eventually reaches the green patina most people picture when they think of copper roofing. That process is the material protecting itself and it cannot be stopped, only delayed with a lacquer that then has to be maintained.

Is half round as good as K-style at moving water?

Not per inch of width, and that is the thing to design around. A half round has a genuinely smaller cross section than a K-style of the same nominal size, so it gets sized up rather than swapped like for like. Half round that overflows is almost always half round that was fitted to the K-style dimensions it replaced.
