About gutter guards & covers

Not all guards are equal, and the cheap drop in mesh sold at hardware stores is worse than no guard at all. It clogs on the surface, then sheds water straight over the front lip in a heavy storm, which puts every gallon exactly where you did not want it.

We fit rigid guards that mount under the first course of shingles or clip to the front lip depending on the roof, so water still enters the trough and debris sheds off the top. The profile matters as much as the material: a cover that sits too proud catches wind, and one that sits too flat lets needles bridge across.

Guards earn their money fastest where there is real leaf load. The Boise North End under mature elms and maples, Emmett orchard country where blossom drops twice a year, and any property with pines close to the roof, because needles are small enough to pass most cheap mesh and long enough to mat together once they are in.

Method

How we do it

  1. Clear first

    Guards go on clean gutter or they seal the problem in. Everything comes out and the downspouts are flushed before we fit anything.

  2. Match the profile

    The guard has to suit the gutter you already have and the pitch of the roof above it. We carry more than one profile because one does not fit every house.

  3. Fit without lifting the shingles

    Where a guard tucks under the first shingle course it goes in without breaking the seal. Where the roof will not take that, it clips to the front lip instead.

  4. Test under water

    A guard that sheds water along with the leaves is worse than nothing. We run water over it and watch where it goes.

Signs you need guards

If you recognise more than one of these it is worth having someone look, and looking is free.

  • Clearing the gutters more than twice a year
  • Pine, spruce or fir within reach of the roofline
  • Mature deciduous trees overhanging the house
  • Water overflowing at one particular corner every autumn
  • Seedlings or grass actually growing in the trough
  • A two or three storey elevation you would rather not put a ladder against

What drives the price

We quote on site rather than over the phone, because these vary enough between houses that a phone number would be a guess. Here is exactly what we are weighing up.

Linear footage covered
Priced per foot, and you do not always need the whole house. Sometimes only the runs under trees are worth covering.
Guard type
Rigid guards cost more than mesh and last enormously longer. We will quote both and tell you plainly which one we would put on our own house.
Condition of the existing gutter
If the gutter underneath is sagging or failing, covering it is money spent on the wrong problem. We will say so.
Roof access
Steep pitch and height add setup time in the same way they do for installation.

Questions about guards

Do gutter guards actually work, or do they just move the problem?

Good ones work. Rigid guards fitted to the right profile will keep leaves and needles out of the trough for years. The cheap drop in mesh sold at hardware stores is a different matter: it clogs on the surface, and once the surface is matted the water runs straight over the front lip in heavy rain. That is worse than an open gutter, because at least an open gutter fails slowly.

Will I ever have to clean my gutters again?

Less often, but no honest contractor will tell you never. Fine grit and shingle granules still work through over time, and a guard under a heavy pine will collect needles on top that need brushing off. Realistically you go from twice a year to checking every couple of years.

Will guards void my roof warranty?

Not the way we fit them. Guards that tuck under the first shingle course go in without lifting or nailing through the roofing. Where a roof will not take that, we clip to the front lip of the gutter instead and leave the roofing untouched.

Can guards be fitted to gutters I already have?

Usually yes, as long as the existing gutter is sound and the profile matches. If the gutter is sagging or the hangers are pulling out, that gets fixed first. There is no point covering a system that is already failing.
