Underground Downspout Drainage

Connect downspouts to underground drainage and pop-up emitters to carry roof runoff to a planned discharge point.

About underground downspout drainage

An underground downspout extension can move roof runoff away from the wall and out to a more suitable discharge area. The route and outlet need to fit the property rather than being guessed from the street.

We review the downspout locations, grade, run length and where water can safely discharge. Where appropriate, the system can end at a pop-up emitter that opens as water arrives and closes when flow stops.

Every property is different. The written estimate explains the proposed route, emitter locations, excavation and other included work before you decide.

What you get

What is included

  • On-site review of the full roof-runoff and downspout layout
  • Underground drain-line route and discharge point included in the written scope
  • Pop-up emitter placement planned for the site conditions
  • Downspout connection and debris removal as itemized in the estimate
  • Property cleaned up before the crew leaves
Method

How we do it

  1. Review the full water-management layout

We look at all roof runoff paths, existing downspouts, grade and where water can discharge on the property.

  2. Plan the route and outlet

The estimate identifies the underground route, connection points and pop-up emitter locations for your property.

  3. Install the scoped drainage system

We connect the specified downspouts and place the drain line and pop-up emitters as shown in the written scope.

  4. Restore and tidy the work area

We remove job debris and leave the property cleaner than we found it.

Worth checking

Signs you need underground drainage

If you recognise more than one of these it is worth having someone look, and looking is free.

  • Downspout discharge collects beside the home
  • Runoff leaves persistent puddles or muddy areas
  • Water crosses a walkway or landscape area after rain
  • Existing above-ground extensions are in the way or often moved
  • Several downspouts need a coordinated discharge plan
Pricing

What drives the price

We quote on site rather than over the phone, because these vary enough between houses that a phone number would be a guess. Here is exactly what we are weighing up.

Drain-line length and route
The distance from each downspout to an appropriate discharge location affects material and excavation scope.
Grade and site conditions
Slope, landscaping, hardscape and access can affect where a line can run and how the area is restored.
Number of connections and emitters
The estimate itemizes the downspouts, drain lines and pop-up emitters proposed for the property.

Straight answers

Questions about underground drainage

What does a pop-up emitter do?

It provides an outlet at the end of a buried drain line. Water pressure lifts the cap while runoff discharges, and the cap settles back afterward. Placement depends on the grade and intended drainage area.

Can you connect an existing downspout to underground drainage?

Often, but the route, slope, access and discharge point need to be reviewed on site first. We include the proposed connection and any limitations in the written estimate.

Where will the water come out?

We identify a suitable discharge location for the property and show it in the proposed scope. The right location depends on grade, nearby hardscape and where runoff can disperse.
