Gutter Cleaning

Full clear-out of troughs and downspouts, with a flow test afterwards so you know the water actually moves.

About gutter cleaning

Debris comes out by hand into a bucket, not blown onto your landscaping or left in a pile by the back door. Downspouts are flushed and checked for blockage at the elbow, which is where they block nine times out of ten.

We finish with a flow test, water down every run, because a gutter that looks clear from the top of a ladder can still be holding an inch of standing water on a flat spot. Standing water is what rots a fascia board and what freezes into the wedge that starts an ice dam.

Most Treasure Valley homes want this twice a year. Once after leaf drop in late autumn, once in spring after blossom and cottonwood seed. If you only do it once, do it in autumn, because a gutter full of wet leaves going into a freeze is the single most common cause of the winter damage we get called out to.

What you get

What is included

  • All debris removed by hand into buckets and taken away
  • Downspouts flushed and cleared at the elbow
  • Trough checked for standing water and correct fall
  • Hangers and seams checked while we are up there, with anything failing reported
  • Roof edge and valley checked for debris build up
  • Flow test on every run
  • Landscaping left as we found it
Method

How we do it

  1. Clear by hand

Out into a bucket, not blown over your garden. Blowing debris out is faster for us and worse for you, because it packs the downspout on the way.

  2. Flush the downspouts

Water down each one until it runs clear. If it backs up we find the blockage rather than poking at it from the top.

  3. Check while we are up there

Hangers, seams, fascia, and how the gutter is sitting. You get told what we saw whether or not it needs work now.

  4. Flow test and tidy

Every run gets water. Anything we took out leaves with us.

Worth checking

Signs you need cleaning

If you recognise more than one of these it is worth having someone look, and looking is free.

  • Water spilling over the edge during rain rather than running to a downspout
  • Plants or seedlings visible growing in the gutter
  • Downspouts that trickle or stay dry while the gutter is full
  • Staining down the exterior wall below the gutter line
  • Birds or wasps nesting in the trough
  • More than a year since the last clear out
Pricing

What drives the price

We quote on site rather than over the phone, because these vary enough between houses that a phone number would be a guess. Here is exactly what we are weighing up.

Linear footage and number of storeys
A single storey ranch is quick. Two and three storey work needs more setup and more ladder moves.
How much is in there
A gutter cleared every year is a different job from one that has not been touched in five and has compacted into soil.
Roof pitch and access
Steep roofs and tight side yards slow the work down.
Guards fitted
If there are guards on, they have to come off and go back. That adds time but usually there is far less inside.

Questions about cleaning

How often should gutters be cleaned in the Treasure Valley?

Twice a year for most homes. Once in late autumn after the leaves are down, once in spring after blossom and cottonwood seed. If your house sits under mature trees or close to pines, you may want a third visit. If you can only do one, make it autumn: leaves that go into winter wet are what freeze into the wedge that starts an ice dam.

Do you blow the debris out or take it away?

It comes out by hand into buckets and leaves with us. Blowing debris out is quicker for the crew and worse for the customer, because it packs material into the downspout on the way past and leaves the rest in your landscaping.

Will you tell me if something needs fixing?

Yes, and we will tell you if it does not. While we are up there we look at the hangers, the seams, the fascia and how the gutter is sitting. You get an honest report either way. We would rather you trusted the one time we say something needs doing.
