About gutter repair

A sagging run is usually hanger spacing or a rotted fascia board behind it, not the gutter itself. We find the cause before quoting, because re hanging onto soft fascia just moves the problem one season down the road.

Seam failures on sectional gutter can be resealed, and often that is the right answer. But if the same system has already failed at three different joints, resealing the fourth buys you a year. We will tell you when repair is the sensible option and when you are better off putting the money toward seamless.

Downspout damage from ladders, ice and snow load is quick to put right and worth doing before it backs water up into the trough. A crushed elbow is a five minute job that prevents a much larger one.

How we do it

  1. Find the cause

    Sagging, leaking and overflowing all have several possible causes and they need different fixes. We work out which one it is before we quote.

  2. Check what is behind it

    Most sag is the fascia board, not the gutter. If the board is soft, re hanging onto it is money wasted and we will say so.

  3. Repair or recommend replacement

    We will tell you plainly when a repair is worth it and when the system has reached the end. A repair that buys twelve months is not a repair.

  4. Re pitch and test

    Fall gets corrected so water actually reaches the outlet, then every run we touched gets water down it.

What is actually wrong
Replacing hangers on one run is a small job. Re pitching a whole elevation is not. Diagnosis comes first for that reason.

Questions about repair

Is it worth repairing my gutters or should I replace them?

It depends on how many things have failed and why. One pulled hanger or one leaking corner is worth repairing on almost any system. But if a sectional gutter has failed at several joints already, the remaining joints are the same age and the same caulk, and you are buying a year at a time. We will tell you which situation you are in rather than quoting whichever one pays better.

Why is my gutter sagging in the middle?

Usually one of three things. The hangers are spaced too far apart for the snow load, the hangers have pulled out of the fascia, or the fascia board behind them has gone soft and no longer holds a screw. The third is the most common on older homes and the most important to catch, because re hanging onto rotten wood fails again within a season.

Water runs down behind my gutter. What causes that?

Normally a missing or failed drip edge, or a gutter hung slightly too low for the roof line so water sheets off the shingles and past the back of the trough. Both are fixable without replacing the gutter, and both are worth fixing quickly because that water is landing on the fascia every time it rains.
